Veteran Bangladesh wicketkeeper-batsman Mushfiqur Rahim has retired from One Day Internationals (ODIs). The 36-year-old declared his retirement on Wednesday (March 5), ending his 18-year ODI career.
Mushfiqur posted on Facebook to announce the news to his fans and talked about always giving his 100% while representing his country.
“I am retiring from the ODI format today. Alhamdulillah for all. Though our success might have been modest on the international stage, this is sure: whenever I went out there on the field representing my nation, I gave 100% plus with dedication and sincerity,” Mushfiqur posted.

Mushfiqur said the choice was not easy but it seemed to be the appropriate time to quit and thanked all those who stood by him in his entire career.

“The past couple of weeks were extremely tough on me, and I have understood that this is my fate. Allah in the Quran says: ‘Wa tu’izzu man tasha’ wa tu’zhilu man tasha’ [And He honours whom He wills, and He disgraces whom He wills] (3:26).”. “May Allah forgive us and bless righteous Iman to everyone. Finally, I would like to thank my family, my friends, and my fans for whom I have played cricket for the past 19 years,” Mushfiqur stated.
Mushfiqur made his ODI debut against Zimbabwe in August 2006. With the passage of time, he emerged as one of the most consistent batters of Bangladesh and an indispensable keeper behind the stumps.

He retired as Bangladesh’s most experienced ODI player, having appeared in 274 games. He aggregated 7,795 runs at an average of 36.42, with nine centuries to his name, his best score being 144. Behind the stumps, he had taken 243 catches and registered 56 stumpings.
Even though Mushfiqur has retired from ODIs, he will continue to play Test and T20 cricket. His expertise and leadership will remain insightful for Bangladesh in the longer formats.
