Sam Curran in the race for England’s white-ball captaincy after becoming Surrey T20 captain

Young England all-rounder Sam Curran has been named the captain of Surrey’s men’s team for the upcoming Vitality T20 Blast 2025 season. Sam Curran has the chance to prove his credentials as a potential future England white-ball captain, especially after wicketkeeper-batter Jos Buttler’s resignation.

The 26-year-old has been with Surrey since his U15 days and first captained a Surrey side at the U17 level. He has leadership experience in franchise cricket, including captaining Punjab Kings in the IPL and leading the Desert Vipers to the ILT20 2025 final. Curran also briefly captained Surrey in the 2023 Vitality Blast.

I Am Deeply Honoured and Proud – Sam Curran

Sam Curran expressed his pride after being appointed Surrey’s T20 captain, calling it a privilege to lead such a talented group of players at an iconic club. Curran stated that he is determined to win trophies.

“I am deeply honoured and proud to have been appointed Surrey’s T20 captain,” Curran said. “It is a privilege to lead such a great group of players and to continue representing this iconic club.

“I look forward to leading our team and will do everything I can to live up to the standards and expectations that Surrey prides itself on,” he added.

“I am very determined to deliver trophies and try to replicate what has been achieved in the County Championship the last few years to make the Members and fans proud.”

Sam Curran was England’s Player of the Tournament in their 2022 T20 World Cup triumph but has struggled to find a place in the white-ball squad. He was not selected for the recent series, including the 2025 Champions Trophy.

Curran captained Surrey in the 2023 Vitality Blast. He has scored over 4,000 runs in 268 T20 matches at a strike rate of 135.15, including 24 half-centuries and a century against Hampshire in last year’s Blast.

With the ball, he has picked up 254 wickets at an economy of 8.80, including four five-wicket hauls. Curran has represented England in over 100 matches across all formats since making his debut in 2018.

This Is the Right Time for Sam to Take Over – Alec Stewart

Surrey’s High-Performance Cricket Advisor, Alec Stewart, thanked Chris Jordan for his three years as T20 captain. He stated that Jordan remains a vital part of the squad both on and off the field. Stewart also mentioned that Sam Curran’s appointment comes at the right time in his career.

“I’d like to thank Chris Jordan for his three years as captain of the T20 side. He led the team to consecutive appearances at Finals Day and will remain a key part of the side on and off the field. CJ is one of the most senior players in the team and is greatly respected by everyone at the Club,” Alec Stewart said.

“This is the right time for Sam to take over as the captain with where he’s at in his career. It’s a great opportunity for him to put his mark on the team and help to take us that one step further to deliver silverware. Sam has shown his leadership qualities already both at Surrey and in the IPL and he will bring a huge amount to the role.”
